This week started off slightly different than normal. Monday was the same as any other, but Tuesday, I noticed that Norah was acting differently. I couldn't place my finger on it, and decided to just watch her. By Wednesday I knew something was off, but again had nothing specific to pinpoint. She would mess with her ear, but not really enough to suggest it hurt. Her balance was off when walking, but I couldn't tell if that was a result of her trying to go faster than she can, and she was fussier than normal. Her appetite was almost non-existent, but not consistently.
After much debate, both internal and external, I took her into the doctor Thursday morning. From my description of her behavior, they were surprised to discover that she did NOT have either a sinus or ear infection. But said that it was good that I had brought her in as she was having a bad attack of allergies (to make things even more fun she was also teething). I was told that they were seeing tons of kids with the same symptoms, and that pretty much everyone was miserable. They gave me instructions on how best to handle things, and said that if anything changed (i.e. spiking fever) to call immediately.
I took Norah home, gave her medicine, a bottle and then laid her down for a nap. When she woke up three hours later, she was flushed and her entire body was warm. I took her temperature and was shocked to see it flash 102!! I immediately gave her Tylenol and then called the doctor back. They had just seen her, so they knew that on top of her allergies she must have also contracted a virus. I was told to keep giving her Tylenol along with TLC, and if it hadn't changed by the end of the weekend or got worse to call immediately.
Poor Norah spent 24 hours absolutely miserable. She didn't want to be held, but didn't want to be put down. She didn't want to eat, but was hungry. She wanted to sleep but couldn't due to congestion. She wanted to play, but was just too sick. She spent much of the time just sobbing in our arms. It was a long 24 hours but we made it through and by Saturday morning her fever had broken. She wasn't quite back to her old self, but was obviously feeling MUCH better.
So we survived yet another illness, and while we know that it only helps to build her immune system, it's very hard to see her so miserable. We thought about taking pictures of her to add to this post, but decided against it. Some things are just too pitiful.
