To keep the kids entertained, and allow them yet another creative outlet, I started giving them UPS boxes to color and decorate with stickers. They can spend up to an hour on a particular box, coloring it, drawing pictures on it, and covering it in stickers. They have come to enjoy this particular activity so much, that any time a new box is discovered they beg and plead to have it. Of course we let them and are rewarded by happy and creative kids! It would seem that kids really don't need elaborate and expensive play systems and entertainment devices, just a plain brown box with markers and stickers.
