Penguin Days

The winter weather has been ridiculous. Each day starts in the low 30's and concludes in the mid to high 60's, often with a little bit of mist just to get everything wet enough to be a mess. The temperature falls dramatically as soon as the sun sets, making sure to take the fun out of marathon training.

Our feeling has been that if we're stuck with freezing or near freezing weather and precipitation, we might as well get some snow so the kids have something to be excited about. Evidently the weatherman disagrees. As a result, everyone has been going stir-crazy.
Jeff noticed that the Dallas Zoo has Penguin Days, giving discount admission during January and February. The weather looked decent for Sunday, so we loaded up the kids and their wagon after church and headed to the zoo. They were ecstatic to be out of the house, and ran wild through the zoo. No animal statue survived the day unridden or unhugged.

Initially the kids were determined to find the elephants, but they tired of these and most other animals fairly quickly.Norah and Justin found the two Nile Crocodiles to be the most captivating animals at the zoo. They are not accustomed to seeing crocodiles swimming so actively around in the enclosure, repeatedly coming to the surface to look around before diving again.
We spent more time at their pen that anyone could imagine, then came back for more. Elephants, not bad. Zebras, WOW Zebras, well they're not that cool...yawn. Cougar, pretty cool. Giant snakes, holy cow that's a big snake. Cobras, we don't like cobras. The tail of a crocodile faintly visible in murky water, that's the stuff. He's right up there with the trash monster.
