While Riding the Rail....

Sentimental Moment or Why Did the Baguette Cross the Road?

Robert Hershon

Don't fill up on bread
I say absent-mindedly
The servings here are huge

My son, whose hair may be
receding a bit, says
Did you really just
say that to me?

What he doesn't know
is that when we're walking
together, when we get
to the curb
I sometimes start to reach
for his hand

Jeff read this poem one day while on the way home (don't worry he wasn't the one driving)! With both babies growing so fast it's hard not to be affected by this poem. We can't imagine a day when they won't need us anymore, when they won't need us to watch over them. But we are comforted by the knowledge that we never really stop needing our parents. Our needs simply change. From needing diapers changed, to holding a hand as we cross the street, to needing a shoulder to cry on and an understanding ear. Perhaps love is the only thing from our parents we require that never changes!
