This year we decided the kids were old enough to try to watch the city's fireworks display. We loaded everyone in the car and our caravan headed toward the park. The city neglected to mention on it's web page that the most obvious routes to their recommended viewing areas would be barricaded well before the show began. As a result we had to deal with many impatient drivers attempting to cut into the ever growing and painfully slow line.

Wimpy drivers ahead of us were roundly booed as they caved to the pressure of the bullies and allowed them to cut the line. We rode within mere inches of the car bumpers ahead and held the left side of the lane to cut off their angle. Neither of our drivers, Debbie and I, allowed a single line jumper to break ranks. We were stuck together like train cars and cheers erupted as our line advanced and the would-be intruders turn signals blinked in futility from the center lane. We finally "white-knuckled it" to a safe parking space and rushed with our assortment of folding chairs and diaper bags to get a spot with a view.

The fireworks began before we were fully settled, and we had to adjust on the fly as we realized we had an obstructed view. We improvised and settled down in the middle of the blocked off boulevard's median and enjoyed a decent show. The kids climbed back and forth between everyone's arms and were not overwhelmed by the fireworks. They were happily busy with their glow in the dark bracelets and necklaces and enjoyed swiping them from each other, trying to accumulate all their favorite colors. Overall the evening was a success, and only the line jumpers were left crying.
