In recent years we have adopted a policy of multiple family Christmas celebrations, not that we want to prolong the season, but the kids' ages, distance between family gatherings, traffic, safety, vacation time, practicality, our church duties and participation, stress, and the desire to fully enjoy one experience uninterrupted before starting another have "driven" us to this practice. Following Christmas and New Years celebrations with Heather's family in our hometown, we got some much needed rest, then made our yearly journey to Granny's house on highways empty of insane holiday drivers.

The siren call of McDonald's playland lured us off route temporarily and gave the kids an opportunity to burn off some energy.

The kids were anxious to get to Granny's house and made constant pleas of "Can we just go to Granny's house?" They evidently were under the mistaken impression that we were just driving around for recreational purposes before heading down the block to Granny's house. We continually reminded them that it really does take 5 hours because it's a long way, we're going as fast as we legally can. Despite the distance, the boredom, and their need for rest, they refused to nap, opting to alternate between chattering and fighting the majority of the drive.

Granny, Gramps, and Ryder were cheerful and happy to meet us despite suffering through an outbreak of winter head colds among other things. Everyone adopted the predictable routine, Dad and I unloaded the car, the ladies chatted, and the kids chased the dog and explored the displays of Christmas decorations, happy to be free of the Korean made, compact mobile restraint and torture system (Hyundai Tuscon for you English speakers).
