Melting at the Arboretum

Some unseasonably cool recent weather raised our hopes that it would be a nice day to be outside at the Arboretum. It wasn't. Although the plantings were beautiful, it was hot and the air was heavy.
The kids enjoyed wandering around, but we were quickly steamed, with our only hope lying in the cooling waters of the frog fountain. A quick detour to the little oasis seemed brilliantly appropriate, but some "big kids" were intimidating Norah with some overly vigorous horseplay, redirecting the fast and strong streams of water directly onto her head. With that, she was pretty much "done" with the whole excursion and begged to go. Although we managed to talk her into staying just a little bit longer.

Justin happily puttered around, teetering precariously along the slick, steep edge of the drain inlet. He did not roar into the oncoming water, but flapped his arms and haphazardly meandered throughout the exhibit, somehow narrowly missing the wildly running older kids, whose parents were conspicuously absent or overwhelmingly inattentive. (Judging by their behavior, I would guess their parents had seen an opportunity for freedom from the little monsters and ran maniacally for their cars; making a frantic escape to the anonymity of an all-inclusive Mexican beach resort and a days long parade of frozen margaritas.)

I digress. Back to sweet Justin. Our little water baby was happily soaked to the bone, with beads of water hanging from every curl of his yellow hair. He squinted as he anticipated the unavoidable aquatic projectiles, satisfied to just do his thing.

Fun or not, we were all zonked and despite their excitement, the kids were not conscious long after we got in the car.
