Scenes of a beautiful sunset over the gulf, not fully captured by the camera's inadequacy.
When I consulted my calendar a few months ago I was happy to see my annual society conference would be held in Galveston, and I was further excited to see it corresponded with our 9th wedding anniversary, thinking it would be great to roll a family vacation into a business paid trip. I pictured walks on the beach at sunset, playing with the kids in the water, sitting out on the beachfront deck eating dinner. A good time would be had by all, and finally we would get a well deserved break to catch our breaths, enjoy some family time, and go on an adventure, or at least just do something different to break the monotony of the same old scenery and same old routine. This would be a great mini-vacation and a memorable anniversary.

So today we celebrated yet another happy anniversary together, but apart. Heather's class has mandatory weekend meeting only three times annually, and as luck would have it, this was it.
Every morning I enjoyed a morning run on the beach at sunrise, followed by a casual stroll, examining a few seashells and watching the gulls. I enjoyed a beer and ate seafood for lunch and dinner on the beachfront decks watching the tide roll, and I explored the island from one end to the other, but I did it alone or with my boss. (For the record: He's a great guy, and we have a great working relationship, but that's not what I had in mind. ) I shared the sunrise and sunset over the water with my loving wife, but it was by fuzzy, dark photos from my camera phone.

This was not an agonizing experience, in fact it was educational and fun at times, albeit a little lonely. One thing was clear through it all, life is not made by the things you can buy or the places you may travel, its made by being with those you truly love.
