Planting Veggies

Norah and Justin add a special element to all yard work. They have such great interest in things I've long since learned to ignore. They spotted my ear protection I use when trimming the hedges and begged until I gave it to them. They were amused and confused by it and mimicked my behavior by putting the way too big headphones on their ears, which did nothing to lessen their hearing. As I spoke to Norah she hugged the headphones tight to her ears saying "What? I can't hear you!" I was slow to catch on and repeated myself before realizing she was playing, then silently mimed words like I was yelling directions to her. She giggled with glee and continued yelling "I can't hear you!" several time until Justin's desperation demanded his turn, and repeated the game.

Undoubtedly the new novelty could have continued for hours, but we had work to do. We grabbed watering cans and shovels and adjourned to the back yard where we planted tomatoes, squash, zucchini and green beans, then raked the yard and pulled some weeds. The kids have learned to differentiate between weeds, grass and perennials, although enthusiasm sometimes results in some friendly fire casualties.

We were quite proud of our handiwork at the end of the day and were quick to tell Heather all about it when she got home from work. The highlight of the day for Norah and Justin was their fierce competition to catch the most rolie polies.
