Sam Houston Monument

Throughout the years, we've passed the Sam Houston statue on I-35 countless times, which let us know we were getting close to Granny and Gramp's house.  I always wanted to stop and see what it was all about, but it was out of the way and we never made the time.  Since we were literally taking the same exit to get to Huntsville State Park, I thought we should stop and check it out.  At 67 feet tall, it's the world's largest statue depicting an American hero. Sure Sam isn't the most handsome devil out there, but surely everyone could appreciate the scale....or not.  Sam was met with supreme disinterest by 3/4 of our little party, who barely managed to humor me with a couple quick courtesy poses.

On the other hand, Norah and Justin were fascinated by his bodyless head, a tree stump, a small footbridge, and a bench.  Heather took the opportunity to stretch her legs and I found the perfect map of Texas State Parks in the Visitor Center.  The stop proved to have something for everybody after all.
