The kids had been cooped up in the house for a week and were beginning to go stir crazy. Our walks had been limited by the summer heat and timing of naps, so today we were all ready for any change of routine. Upon seeing that I had all the ingredients, I decided to make sugar cookies and frosting. These are the same recipes Mom used when I was growing up, and I LOVE them.

I lined up all the ingredients, pulled out all the bowls and baking sheets, and collected all the cookie cutters and set them on the counter. Since we don't make cookies on a regular basis, our selection of cutters is somewhat eclectic. We have stars from our trip to the American Girl store where we went for lunch one day. We also have a gift set from Santa including Halloween ghosts, pumpkins, Thanksgiving turkeys and autumn leaves.

Norah sat on a stool at the counter as I worked. I told her the name of each ingredient and let her smell them. She "helped" me measure them out and mix them together. While the dough was cooling we worked on the icing. We all decided that yellow would be our icing color, and through several taste tests we approved the icing flavor.

Once the dough was ready we rolled it out and started cutting cookies out of it. Norah was a big help until she swiped a bite of cookie dough and ate it. "
Ummm, Mommy I like! It's good" was repeated over and over again as she ate it faster than I could cut it and place it on the sheet. I tried not to let her eat too much but I'm the worst when it comes to snacking on cookie dough, so I could not say much! Despite all our attempts to finish the dough before we had baked it, we ended up with some great looking cookies. We had yellow stars, pumpkins, leaves, ghosts, and turkeys, sprinkled with pink, blue and yellow sprinkles.

It was no surprise that Justin loved the cookies because he is notorious for having a sweet tooth. Conversely, Norah has never shown much of interest in sweets, but even she devoured several cookies before resorting to licking the frosting off and proclaiming herself full.
In honor of this occasion:
Happy 4
