Baby Ballerina

When I was two years old, my mother signed me up for my first ballet class, and I loved it. I loved to dance and perform and continued with it for many, many years. While looking over a course catalog for the fall I discovered a ballet class for 2-3 year olds through our city's recreation center and immediately decided to enroll Norah. She has loved music since before she was born, and has danced to anything with a beat since she was a tiny baby. Thus I do not feel that I am pushing my love of dancing onto her.

Today I took Norah and Justin to a dance shop to get Norah's first pair of ballet slippers. She was so excited that she was skipping through the store as soon as the gentleman helping us had them on her feet. Then I took her into the fitting room to try on leotards. I needed to double check sizes and was prepared for the inevitable battle that usually ensues when it comes to trying on clothes. Much to my surprise and delight, she was thrilled to try them on, tripping over herself in her haste to wear them. She was so excited she started squealing, laughing and dancing, and telling Justin and me to dance. The other customers in the store smiled as they watched her, and the older dancers had far away looks in their eyes.

Surrounded by the familiar sights and sounds of dance, feeling ballet slippers in my hands again, and seeing my daughter's contagious excitement brought me to tears. That evening after bathtime I had Norah try on her new outfit to show Daddy. She danced and twirled through the house, ecstatic to be wearing her ballet shoes again.

What an incredible day.

***About the video: Norah's very enthusiastic spins can cause the viewer dizziness! What can we say? She likes to turn. Also, what the video doesn't show is that as soon as the music ended and Jeff stopped the recording, Norah turned, pointed at the IPOD and yelled "More"!***
