Justin has been sleeping in his floor more lately than he has slept in his bed, which has led us to believe that he's not just a restless sleeper, he's also uncomfortable. After tiring of the floor, he often made his way to our bed to snooze. We saw Norah do the same thing a few months ago, and we came to the same conclusion. We felt we needed to convert the day bed to a full size bed, but we asked Justin his opinion. He was strongly in favor of a change.
Mommy found a good deal on a mattress and Daddy set out to convert the bed frame. I tried to simply sneak a toolbox and a drill back to his room, but Justin's radar detected me and unsurprisingly, I was intercepted immediately. Although tools aren't really her passion, Norah wasn't about to miss out, so she got in the middle of the action. Both kids sat in the middle of the bed frame paying close attention and asking questions while I tried to figure out what went where. They were very helpful and retrieved several tools and pieces of hardware for me.
Things went a little too well, so we found that the allen wrench was missing and most of the screws were 1/4" too small to effectively do anything. This was not surprising because the bolts were 1/4" too short on Norah's bed. I became distracted and did something foolish which resulted in the drill relieving me of a slice of my thumb. Both kids began "mothering" me immediately, speaking softly with concern, asking if it hurt, and making sure I was okay. They were super sweet and accompanied me to the bathroom where they practically stood on my feet as I performed some very minor first aid. We discussed the uses of alcohol vs peroxide and triple antibiotic as neither Norah or Justin could decide whether they were fascinated or disgusted by the procedure.
With a fresh bandage applied, we got back to work and made our shopping list for Home Depot. Both kids were disappointed that they didn't get to go to Home Depot or the mattress store, but there was no room for the car seats and the mattress. Heather and I moved everything from the car to Justin's room and completed the assembly. Justin bounced around excitedly then hopped onto his new bed and dinosaur sheets. Norah was excited too and followed shortly after. For the first time in a long time, Justin slept through the night in the middle of his bed, never considering opting for the floor. Sleep tight Baby Bear.
