Where's the Love?

Over the last few weeks, Norah has really started to react emotionally to things people say to her, but most especially the words of her brother. She has always been more responsive to our verbal praise than Justin, and she also takes it very personally when we reprimand her. She smiles the brightest smile when we tell her how proud we are of her, and when she's in trouble she spends a lot of time trying to make sure we are no longer mad at her.

Today Justin was in a foul mood as he had been up too late, then up too early, with no nap in between. As we were getting in the car to go pick up Jeff at the station, Norah said something to him, and he declared "I don'k like you". Three times. I thought her heart was going to break. As we drove she kept repeating what he said. I tried explaining that he was just in a bad mood and that he really did love her, but to no avail.

About 10 minutes later when Jeff joined us, Justin was sound asleep. As Jeff loaded his bag in the car Norah immediately informed him "Daddy, Justin said he didn't like me 20 times.". Jeff was hard pressed not to laugh at both the exaggerated number, but also the hurt behind it. He also tried to explain that Justin really did love her, and he was just crabby. It seemed to reassure her this time. It also helped that Justin was in a much better mood when he woke up. When Norah asked if he liked her, he said "Yep!"

All was right with the world again, that is until they decided they wanted to play with the same toy at the same time!
