The kids are well known for their ability to create massive messes. When I walk into a room they've destroyed, all I have to do is say "You guys......!" and Norah responds, "I know. It's a mess."
We know they are still little, but we are overwhelmed by the number of toys that are left ALL over the house. At this point both of us are exhausted by the time they go to bed, and are defeated by spending the next half hour picking up the newly created obstacle course.
This evening after bath time, I informed them that they needed to help in the clean up process, or the toys would be finding a new home. I gave them little jobs that they could quickly and easily accomplish. Once one task was completed I praised them, then gave them another. While things were not perfect, we soon caught a glimpse of the living room floor again!
While Daddy read the evening's stories, I quickly put away a few remaining items. It was then that I discovered that their idea of putting something away in their room meant simply: Putting it in their room.

I didn't say anything though. They did exactly what I asked, and at 2 and 3 I think we are off to a great start. Now if they're still doing it at 16, well, that will be a different story entirely. For now we are happy with the progress, even if it means a few more obstacle courses to clear before bedtime!
