Daddy's passion is designing spaces and planting or preserving trees, Norah loves to draw and build things, and Justin simply wants to cut trees and play chase. Today seemed to be the perfect storm for all three. Our lilac c
haste trees were getting crowded and needed thinning, so I placed the lopping sheers in the appropriate location and the kids took turns lopping branches off. Justin would have happily cut every tree to the ground and continued trimming til it looked like it was fed through a shredder, so he was somewhat disappointed when the job concluded.

His disappointment was short lived as I encouraged the kids to grab all the branches and put them on their playground to make a "tree house." Initially they both thought I had lost my mind, admittedly that's not that unlikely. They soon saw that fun could be had and didn't stop gathering branches until they were all utilized.

The kids climbed into their
camouflaged shelter and screamed "Daddy! Come find us!" I acted genuinely surprised that I
couldn't' find them, and wondered aloud "Where are Norah and Justin? I can't find them." This spurred forth a new round of screams, "No Daddy! Be a monster!" which was followed by a chorus of uncontrollable giggles. I stomped around like a T-Rex, utilizing my "Monster Voice
TM" to proclaim my desperate quest for food and firm belief that yummy little kids were nearby.

Tree branches wiggled, quaked and shook as they maneuvered to keep an eye on the monster, depending on his proximity their taunts varied in confidence. "Can't find me monster!" continually emanated from their undetectable haven until finally the monster saw them and tried frantically to snag an arm or leg, although their fortress proved largely impenetrable. The monster stomped away after each failed attempt, but was always taunted to return for another pass. This went on for well over an hour and they didn't stop talking about it for days.

Some of the best things in life are free.
