Granny and Gramps Visit

The weekend of our Half Marathon benefiting Susan G. Komen arrived, as did Granny, Gramps and Ryder. We asked if they would mind watching the kids while we got up bright and early to head to the race. It didn't take much arm twisting to talk them into making the drive up, and everyone was excited to get to spend time together. Friday we went on a long walk after they arrived, wearing everyone out, then headed for dinner when Jeff got home.

Saturday morning we got up and headed to downtown Dallas to pick up our race packets and enjoy the sights. Packet pick up turned out to be far more emotional than I anticipated, and I found myself constantly struggling not to cry. We were surrounded by lots of pink, lots of people taking pictures and lots of women obviously going through treatment. It hit home once more that my Aunt Paula is gone, but I tried to hold back the tears as we walked through the expo, looking at vendor booths, and picking up our stuff.

After leaving the expo we wandered around downtown, letting the kids and Ryder wear themselves out exploring. We ate a wonderful lunch outside, then walked to a park where the kids could walk bare foot through a fountain and run up and down a hill to their hearts content.

That evening, before heading out to dinner, Justin modeled some cowboy boots that were his daddy's once upon a time. He did not like being told what shoes he was going to wear, but compromised by putting on his work goggles in addition to the new boots. It was exciting to see him in something that belonged to Jeff! Norah, not to be out done, grabbed her boots and started modeling them for us without fuss.

After a yummy carb filled dinner, we settled the kids into bed, then turned on the DVD my relatives sent me featuring a slideshow put together for my aunt's memorial service. I wanted to take a few minutes that evening to remember why we were running the race.

We are thankful for Granny and Gramps coming to spend time with all of us, making sure we were well fed before Sunday, and for watching the kids for us so that we could participate in such an important event. We were also thankful that they didn't have to leave until Monday, giving us just a little more time to visit. It was a great weekend and we are so glad we got to share it with them.
