Justin's 1 Month

It seems almost impossible that a whole month has passed since Justin entered our lives. Justin is full of smiles and is starting to fill out, looking less and less like an angry Winston Churchill. He loves to look around, and has already mastered the art of rolling from his tummy to his back. In fact, he does it so fast and so often it's almost impossible to get a picture of him on his tummy.

The biggest challenge we have faced since bringing him home is his issue with acid reflux. Two days after he was born, while holding him I listened to him swallow, and knew we were going to have issues. I kept my fingers crossed that it wouldn't be the case, but two weeks later he was on Prevacid.
For those of you keeping score at home, this is the same medication Norah was on for 9 months. Unfortunately the half tablet twice a day wasn't doing the trick, so we ended up back at the doctor's office. I was told to try giving him formula thickened with cereal in addition to the medication. We tried that for two days, at which point he was only getting worse, so I called the doctor Sunday night with Justin screaming in pain in the background.

I didn't know that I would be talking to a doctor I had never met (our pediatrician's office was off for the weekend). He told me that babies don't cry like that with reflux, so Justin must have an obstruction. We were told to take him to a pediatric ER downtown immediately. Not agreeing with the doctor, but not wanting to ignore him, we dropped Norah off at a friend's and headed to the ER. To make a long and painful story much shorter, he didn't have an obstruction (we didn't even have x-rays done).
I was told to go back to nursing with the medication, and to call my doctor in the morning. It was decided that because Justin only got worse when on the formula, that I would nurse and we would up his dosage slightly. So far the results of this plan have been positive, and while Justin will occasionally have a rough evening, it's no where near as bad as it was. Thank goodness.

Overall he is an incredibly sweet baby, who is both curious and fascinated by the world around him. He loves to be cuddled, and loves playing on his mat. He also enjoys being carried around in my sling, and will sleep there for hours. My favorite time with him is while I nurse him. He loves to eat, and will sigh contentedly throughout the entire time. After he has finished eating he will lay there looking around and usually shower me with smiles. Those smiles are so big I have taken to calling them the Pikachu smiles because they take up his whole face!
